General information
The four-star hotel Hospedería de Monfragüe (pronounced “mon-frá-guay”) is the latest addition to the Vaughantown program and is located in The National Park of Monfragüe, in the western Spanish region of Extremadura, a land-locked region that, paradoxically, produced 80 percent of all the great conquistadors who crossed the Atlantic to explore and conquer much of the New World. The hotel is located well inside the national park and is within easy driving distance of three monumental cities: Trujillo, Cáceres, and Plasencia. The Tagus River, the longest in the Iberian Peninsula, flows through the park on its way to Lisbon. Also within the park is a well-known refuge for Griffon Vultures, Peregrine Falcons, Bonelli Eagles, and Eagle-Owls. The nearby village of Torrejón el Rubio, with 743 inhabitants, is very small but can boast to be the home of the Castle of Monfragüe, dating back to the time with the Tagus River was the border between Muslim and Christian Spain. Within the castle walls you can visit the Hermitage of the Virgin of Monfragüe, which include a valuable medieval wood carving from the 13th century.
The hotel was built using the local slate stone that characterizes the national park and was completely remodelled in 2006. Facilities include two lounges with fireplaces, a pocket billiards table, a swimming pool, wireless internet, and terraces that offer you an impressive view of the national park. The region of Extremadura is very famous in Spain, not only as the birthplace of most of the great conquistadors, but as the home for cured meats and hams considered by many to be the best in the world. Fine red wines and delicious cheeses are abundant in the region, but it is the ham of the acorn-fed hogs that bring people to Extremadura from every continent.
